It thrives in the dry, hot climate of the Chihuahuan Desert outskirts, relying on occasional flash floods for water. Growing in limestone derived gypsum silt plains and hills, it stays low to the ground, making it hard to spot, except when its diurnal pink violet flowers (2. 5 5 cm wide)

It thrives in the dry, hot climate of the Chihuahuan Desert outskirts, relying on occasional flash floods for water. Growing in limestone-derived gypsum silt plains and hills, it stays low to the ground, making it hard to spot, except when its diurnal pink-violet flowers (2.5-5 cm wide) bloom for 3-4 days. This flat geophyte cactus has a large taproot for water and energy storage, often shrinking above ground while the root remains alive. Its unique tubercle patterns and flat shape make it especially intriguing.
