COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Physiological Changes of Ageing course. This program examines how the human body changes structurally and functionally over time, why these changes occur, and how they influence physical, cognitive, and sensory wellbeing. You will explore the normal ageing process across all major body systems, recognise age-related patterns, and understand how these changes affect daily functioning, health risks, and quality of life in older adults. This course provides a broad foundation for students, carers, and professionals who work with ageing populations.

This course begins by exploring the physiological changes associated with age and how ageing affects key sensory systems, including vision, hearing, vestibular function, taste, and smell. You will examine how age-related visual decline influences depth perception and light sensitivity, how hearing changes contribute to communication challenges, and how reduced vestibular function affects balance. This section also reviews the progressive decline in taste and smell sensitivity and its effects on nutrition, safety, and enjoyment of food.

The next learning area focuses on the gastrointestinal system and related structures, including the effects of age on the mouth, swallowing, digestion, liver function, and kidney function. You will learn how reduced saliva production affects oral health, how swallowing efficiency changes, and how digestive processes slow with age. This section also explores how liver metabolism decreases, how kidney filtration declines, and how these changes influence medication management and general health in older adults.

A further part of the program examines ageing of the skin and the musculoskeletal system. You will explore how skin becomes thinner and less elastic, how bone density decreases, and how skeletal muscles lose strength and endurance. This section also addresses the decline in flexibility and joint mobility, the implications for daily activities, and the importance of supportive movement habits in reducing falls, pain, and functional limitations.

The course then explores the nervous system and cognitive changes, including how ageing affects nerve conduction, reflexes, and overall neurological functioning. You will examine expected changes in cognition, sleep patterns, and memory, and the difference between normal ageing and pathological cognitive decline. This section highlights how sleep architecture shifts with age and how memory abilities evolve across the lifespan.

The final learning area focuses on the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and immune systems. You will explore how ageing affects heart function, blood vessels, and circulation, as well as changes in the chest wall and lung capacity that influence breathing. This section also examines how hormone production shifts with age and how the immune system becomes less responsive, increasing vulnerability to infections and slowing recovery.

By the end of this course you will be able to explain the major physiological changes associated with ageing, recognise their functional implications, and apply this knowledge to support health, wellbeing, and independence for older adults.

This is a great watch for the price!
I purchased this watch to use mostly down at my cabin. It is well-made, the functions are easy to use, and it has withstood all the abuse I’ve put it through. I wear this while hunting, cutting firewood, riding ATVs, and just running around the timber. If I destroy this watch in six months, it will be well worth the money I paid for it, but I don’t think that’s going happen. It’s stylish enough to wear to the office and just going out. If you’re looking for an every day watch, you’re not worried about destroying, this is the one to get.

Excellent Time Keeper // Terrible Wristband !
The watch itself is fantastic. When I first got it, and set it up, I set it to the time on my computer, which is as accurate as you can get. In the beginning I checked the time accuracy daily. After a few weeks my time checks changed to once, or twice a week. I never had to change the watch's time. The seconds would vary a little, in comparison to the computer clock. But, it never got more than 30 seconds either side of the computer clock. However, the watchband is a big time NO-GO! The buckle, where you connect it on your wrist, can be frustrating most of the time when you are trying to put it on. Once you've got it on, the strap that goes beyond the buckle is held down by a sliding keeper, that slides in and out depending on what you're doing. Terrible design! I wanted to buy a "Twist-a-Flex" wristband, but couldn't find one that matched the unusual design where the straps attach to the watch body. I bought the watch 4 months ago. Today, one of the 4 pins, that connect the straps to the watch body, fell out somewhere, making the watch impossible to wear. Excellent price. Excellent timepiece. Worst design for a wristband that I've ever seen.

Excellent for price, you won't be sorry
If you are looking for a watch with a lot of features that doesn't cost a lot, this is your watch. I tear up watches fairly easily in my line of work and after I killed my Seiko I decided I would hunt out a cheap watch. There aren't a lot of watches at this price range that include a stopwatch, date (with day of the week), AND has a light that is bright enough to actually read the time in the dark. This one does. The watch not dainty; it is big and bulky, bigger than I thought it would be, but not unwieldy and not super heavy. Expect it to be big. This also helps with readability (My son can read the time on this watch from the other side of the couch). The band feels rugged, made of a pliable and soft- feeling rubber and has a two- pronged belt- like closure (think 'biker belt') that keeps it secure on the wrist. Additionally, the holes for the band goes the entire length of the band so it is adjustable for really small wrists up to about 9.25" circumference. Others have complained about how easily the face scratches, but I suspect they've failed to remove the protective coating on the lens. It's a protective film that you have to get your fingernail under to pull off. Once that's off, the lens is crystal clear and fairly tough. I've had mine for a week now and used it under some fairly harsh conditions and the lens is still clear and scratch-free. My only complaint seems petty for a watch at this price point, but the strap-end hold down 'belt'--- the loop that holds down the extra length of the strap when it's buckled--- moves easily and so in use it will occasionally come off and you have to retuck the end back into it. But seriously, this is really minor. If you need an inexpensive digital that's easy to read in both daylight and darkness, ya don't mind a large and bulky, rugged- looking watch, and don't want to spend an arm and a leg, get this one. You likely won't be sorry.
