"Bright, pale yellow with depth and a green hue, even colour throughout. The nose is full and generous, with melon, apple and pear aromas interweaving walnut, toasted almond, spice and oyster shell minerals. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly presented, melon, apple and pear aromas enriched by toasty oak elements, nuances of almond and walnut melded with warm butter and spice, and finished with an umami note and oyster shell minerals. The mouthfeel is creamy and broad; fine-textured phenolics and minerals contribute to an elegant line supported by a balanced and fine acid line. This nutty Chardonnay shows harmonious flavours of generous fruit and oak elements, with excellent intensity and a buttery mouthfeel. Match with roasted chicken and pineapple glazed ham over the next 3-5 years" Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Aug 2022
"A smooth textured and very stylish expression of Chardonnay with aromas and flavours of fresh white peach and pear, some apple and grapefruit. There’s a clay soil and fine wood spice quality adding complexity. Fine, pure and new on the palate with a silky texture touching first then flavours of white fleshed orchard fruit with a note of citrus. Tannins are very fine with a salivating acid line pulling all the attributes together. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2025" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Sep 2022
The Boathouse Chardonnay like its namesake is a real crowd pleaser. Poised and elegant, showing aromas of ripe stonefruit and citrus with a mineral complexity. The palate has a fruit-forward expression softened by subtle oak and malolactic fermentation, balanced with juicy acidity on the finish.
Harvested from a mix of Chardonnay clones B95, 548, and UCD15 vines growing in the greywacke clay soils of the Purerua Peninsula.
The fruit was whole-bunch pressed to tank, before being racked to barrels for fermentation. Fermentation was undertaken by a mix of indigenous and cultured yeast in French oak barriques, 10% new. Partial malolactic fermentation adds complexity and a creamy mouthfeel to the wine. Aged on yeast lees in barrel for 11 months and in tank for a further 3 months before bottling.
Food Pairing: The lovely pithy texture in this wine will make it perfect for classic parings of crayfish, fresh grilled snapper and shellfish. You’ll find those served at The Boathouse most days too.
