Len Hurst won the 200-franc prize in a winning time of 2:31:30; 27 minutes faster than the mark of 2:58:50 set by Spiridon Louis of Greece three months earlier at the first Olympic marathon in Athens, Greece on 10 April 1896.

He went on to be one of the pioneers of distance running.

About the Author

Alex Wilson was born in 1965 in the north of Scotland. He studied German at the University of Stirling. He is an enthusiastic amateur runner with modest aspirations and a lover of single malt Scottish whisky. For many years he has also been interested in the history of athletics, especially long-distance running, and occasionally researches and writes articles about former stars who have slipped into obscurity.

He works as a technical translator for a company in the pharmaceutical sector. He is married with two children and lives in Southern Germany.
