The carbon nanocage is composed of sp2 carbon shells, which form a hollow cavity inside and may have defective microchannels on its surface. These structural features make carbon nanocages excellent in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, catalyst support, and other aspects. Compared to traditional carbon nanotubes and graphene, the unique feature of carbon nanocages lies in their hollow structure and high specific surface area, which provides more pathways for ion and electron transport. At present, there are various methods for preparing carbon nanocages, including metal reduction, carbon evaporation, catalytic pyrolysis, benzene flame combustion, and conversion of nitrogen-containing inorganic substances. Among them, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has become a common preparation method due to its simple equipment and easy control. In addition, using other organic compounds as carbon sources to prepare carbon nanocages at high temperatures through the strong reducibility of active metals is also an effective method.

Electrochemical energy storage and conversion: Carbon nanocages are widely used in lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells as electrode materials or catalyst carriers, significantly improving energy density and charge discharge rates.

Catalyst carrier: Due to its high specific surface area and good conductivity, carbon nanocages are used as carriers for various catalysts, improving their dispersion and stability.

Photothermal catalysis: Nitrogen doped graded carbon nanocages exhibit excellent performance in photothermal CO2 catalysis, effectively improving the photothermal conversion efficiency.

Absorbing material: Carbon nanocages have a high volume filling rate and optimized impedance characteristics, making them efficient absorbing materials.
