China's mid-twentieth-century wars pose extraordinary interpretive challenges. The issue is not just that the Chinese fought for such a long time--from the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 until the close of the Korean War in 1953--across such vast territory. As Hans van de Ven explains, the greatest puzzles lie in understanding China's simultaneous external and internal wars. Much is at stake, politically, in how this story is told.

Today in its official history and public commemorations, the People's Republic asserts Chinese unity against Japan during World War II. But this overwrites the era's stark divisions between Communists and Nationalists, increasingly erasing the civil war from memory. Van de Ven argues that the war with Japan, the civil war, and its aftermath were in fact of a piece--a singular process of conflict and political change. Reintegrating the Communist uprising with the Sino-Japanese War, he shows how the Communists took advantage of wartime to increase their appeal, how fissures between the Nationalists and Communists affected anti-Japanese resistance, and how the fractious coalition fostered conditions for revolution.

In the process, the Chinese invented an influential paradigm of war, wherein the Clausewitzian model of total war between well-defined interstate enemies gave way to murky campaigns of national liberation involving diverse domestic and outside belligerents. This history disappears when the realities of China's mid-century conflicts are stripped from public view. China at War recovers them.

Amazing Jewelry Travel Case
I bought this jewelry case for traveling on a cruise and I absolutely LOVE IT! When I purchased it I didn’t know if it would actually fit all the jewelry I wanted to bring but this box definitely impressed me! It fit all my regular jewelry plus more bc you know us woman love to coordinate with our outfits lol the case/box is sturdy! It didn’t break or even dent throughout my travels. It comes with different pieces to help organize and separate jewelry but it is removable if needed which I had to do bc one of my necklaces is really big. The case fit perfectly in my carry on luggage and didn’t take up much room at all which helped me a lot. I got the black case and I just love how simple and sleek it looks. This is definitely a must have if you need to travel with jewelry and are concerned about things getting damaged, this case keeps them safe and it’s definitely a great value for your money!

So cutie
Color: Cloud White, Material Type: Paper, PU
This is a bit large for a travel size jewelry box lol I really thought it was going to be a bit smaller than what it was. I can see why some of the ladies in the comments are saying they’re using it as their main jewelry box since they don’t have much jewelry for a standard sized jewelry box. With that being said, it’s cute and CAN be small enough for travel. It fits a lot and I got this one in particular bc I like that it has a bigger lower compartment for larger pieces. It’s a nice quality travel jewelry box. It’ll fit my needs. But if you have a knack for packing small and you value space. I’d say skip on this one or do due diligence to double check the measurements to see if it’s something you’re okay with packing.
