This extraordinary French velvet shield frame dates to the late 19th century and embodies both the romance and remembrance of the era. Covered in crimson and gold velvet with decorative brass studs, its heraldic form recalls a family coat of arms — a symbol of lineage and pride.

Inset within the velvet are two original oval photographic portraits:

  • The Soldier: His formal tunic bears a double row of buttons and the number “16” on the epaulettes, identifying him with the historic 16e Régiment d’Infanterie of the French Army. Based in Montpellier, the regiment was active throughout the Third Republic and into the Great War. His uniform style, with high collar and brass buttons, places him in the 1880s–1890s, when France was modernizing its military yet still dressing its soldiers in the proud tradition of the Second Empire.

  • The Lady: With her center-parted coiffure, modest high-necked dress with buttoned bodice, and crisp white collar insert, she reflects the fashions of the 1875–1885 period. Her formal pose against a studio balustrade was typical of late 19th-century photographic portraiture, suggesting respectability and refinement.

Together, these portraits likely represent husband and wife, or sweethearts preserved in a decorative memorial. Shield-shaped frames such as this were often displayed in parlors as tokens of remembrance, particularly for men in uniform. Their combination of heraldic symbolism and sentimental attachment makes them rare survivors of a bygone domestic tradition.

Why it matters: Antique frames are collectible in any form, but velvet heraldic shields with intact original portraits are exceptionally scarce. This piece carries both decorative impact and intimate human history, bridging the worlds of military heritage, family memory, and French decorative arts. Comparable examples appear only occasionally in European markets, often commanding several hundred dollars.

Dimensions: approx. 13” x 12” (to be confirmed)
Condition: Velvet shows wear consistent with its age; portraits remain intact and clear; overall stable and ready to hang.

Good fit
Color: Light Grey, Size: Medium
A nice vest and a true slim fit. Good quality for the price and no satin back, the material is used for the whole vest, allowing it to be worn without a jacket and still look smart. I am 6' 3" and 200lbs with a slim build, the Medium size fit like a glove, snug but not tight as a waistcoat should be.

Good Fit, Fold Lines
5'9, around 125-130 pounds, and the Small fit me just fine. Adjuster strap provides a great range of... adjustment. Good waistcoat if you are looking for something quick and cheap. With it being cheap, however, the material suffers. Due to it being folded while in shipping, there are seem lines going down the sides of the waistcoat which make it poke out and look awkward.

Great vest for a great price!
This vest is more slim fitting, stylish, & flattering than many vests. It fits as expected, but it is adjustable in the back, so you do have some wiggle room to tighten & loosen it if you’re unsure about the size. My son wore this vest to homecoming. He is 5’ 10” & 150 lbs, & the size small was a good fit.
