These branches can vary in size and spacing, but the thickened stem at the center always serves as a caudex and storage area for nutrients and moisture. During extended periods of drought, the plant may shed its arms but will regrow them once rainfall returns. With proper care, cultivation of these plants is straightforward, as long as watering is avoided during dormancy periods. These plants typically have two dormant periods, a longer one during the winter and a shorter one during the height of summer.
