A must for researchers using the techniques of light scattering. ― S. C. Snowdon, Journal of the Franklin Institute
The measurement of light scattering of independent, homogeneous particles has many useful applications in physical chemistry, meteorology and astronomy. There is, however, a sizeable gap between the abstract formulae related to electromagnetic-wave-scattering phenomena, and the computation of reliable figures and curves. Dr. van de Hulst's book enables researchers to bridge that gap. The product of twelve years of work, it is an exhaustive study of light-scattering properties of small, individual particles, and includes a survey of all the relevant literature.
Beginning with a broad overview of basic scattering theory, Dr. van de Hulst covers the conservation of energy and momentum; wave propagation in vacuum and in a medium containing scatterers; and polarized light and symmetry relations. The heart of the book is devoted to the rigorous scattering theory for spheres of arbitrary size (Mie theory) and to various modes of approximation such as the Rayleigh-Gaas approximation, the perfect reflection approximation, the geometrical-optics approximation, and others. Methods of computation are given with respect to different kinds of particles, bodies and phenomena: particles small or very large compared to the wavelength, absorbing and nonabsorbing spheres, water drops, circular cylinders, edge phenomena and surface waves, and many others. In the last part, the author covers the use of scattering and extinction experiments as a practical tool, including applications in chemistry, meteorology and astronomy.
This book's comprehensive, lucid coverage of the field makes it a valuable source for all those interested in light-scattering theory. It is absolutely essential for researchers needing to employ light-scattering measurements, and its republication will be welcomed especially by those who have found this necessary source difficult to obtain. Over 400 references. 46 tables. 59 graphs. Subject and name indexes. 44 illustrations.

Is not as durable as they say for large dogs
Color: Multi-colored
My dog loved the fact he got a new toy and he loved the toy itself. Carrying it around and shaking it, that is. The ropes are small and pop right back out of the ball. They are more for a small dog to tug on. The suction is strong but still not strong enough for a 100 lbs Rotti. He kept grabbing the eleasic ropes and pulling off the floor.

Even the rope is awesome!
Color: Multi-colored
The suction power on this wasn’t the greatest. Even using the sticky patch provided didn't keep it stuck to the floor. I will say though: I was terrified it would destroy the cheap flooring I put it on, but the sticky stuff didn’t harm the floor at all. The toy itself has been fantastic. My pup loves to chew on all parts of it (the ball, the suction piece, and the rope) and it’s held up against his jaws of steel. I will be purchasing another one of these once he’s finally destroyed the original (we’ve had it almost 3 months with just about daily use).

Perfect
Color: Blue
I am fostering a Husky/Black and Tan Coon dog. We have had her since early February. She has chewed up a lot of my shoes. She destroyed my other dogs stuffed squeaky toys. So I decided to buy her this ball. She reminds me of Linus from Charlie Brown. She wakes up with this ball and falls asleep with it. I’ve not had another shoe fatality. This ball is her most loved possession. It is pretty tough. Now She did kill the squeaker within the first few hours (which trust me I am GOOD with that! I’ve never put treats in it. The rope is still attached. After this review I am going to buy her another as a back up!

Favorite fetch
We have a 70 lb Aussie and a 13 lb Havanese who compete with each other to fetch toys. This hedgehog is their favorite, largely due to the loud assertive squeak. Our big dog is a chewer and has a history of getting to any squeaker in a toy, once nearly choking when successfully removing one from a smaller toy. She still tries to chew on this toy, going straight for the nose but has not yet gotten to the squeaker which is large enough that I don't believe would be a choking hazard if she did get to it. No soft toy is indestructible, but compared to other plush toys, this is more durable. Once the nose has been chewed off, I have simply hand stitched the hole closed and from then on she's no longer interested in chewing through it. Have run through the wash and comes out fine. When one eventually wears out I order a replacement and the 2 puppies compete once again over ownership.
