Boyington’s reputation was that of a tough, hard-living, heavy-drinking bruiser, known for unorthodox behavior on the ground and in the air. He nevertheless received many military decorations and awards. Among his many citations of merit was a Navy Cross, Purple Heart, and the Medal of Honor.
