Background - What is Hazard identification?

Hazard identification is a part of the process that determines if a particular situation, item or thing is dangerous. Potentially causing harm. 

Risk assessment is a term that describes the entire process as:

1. - Hazard identification is the process of identifying hazards and risk factors that could cause harm
2. - Analyse the risk associated to that hazard and make a decision (risk analysis and risk evaluation)
3. - You can determine the best ways to eliminate the danger or manage the risk if it is not possible (risk control)

The goal of hazard detection is to identify and record any hazards in a workplace. It is a good idea to work in a group and include people who are familiar with the work area as well as those who aren't. This will ensure that you have both an experienced and fresh perspective to inspect the workplace.

Near misses, investigations, health monitoring and inspection results can all be used to identify hazards at work. A hazard is something that causes injury to another person.

Usually, hazards arise from:

2. - Equipment, materials, and substances
3. - How work tasks are done
4. - Work design and management

Safe Work Australia states that it is mandatory to conduct a risk assessment for high-risk activities. This includes diving work, live electrical work, and entry into confined spaces.

This course will include an understanding of awareness of the relevant legislation and your responsibilities in participating in WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control processes .

1. Use selected methods to identify, report and record hazards according to organisational policies and procedures, standards and WHS laws 
2. Provide information and assistance to required personnel during hazard identification process
3. Participate in selecting suitable risk assessment methods for the workplace according to organisational policies and procedures 
4. Assess and record risks using selected methods according to organisational procedures, standards and WHS laws 
5. Provide information and assistance to required personnel during risk assessment process
6. Obtain organisation records of the outcomes of hazard identifications and risk assessments, and use them to participate in developing risk control options 
7. Identify duty holders according to WHS laws and organisational WHS policies, procedures, processes and systems 
8. Participate in selecting risk control options using criteria agreed to by work team, and according to organisational policies, procedures, processes and systems 
9. Identify and report factors impeding successful implementation of selected risk control options to determine potential control measures to be implemented
10.  Review and document potential control measures for compliance with relevant WHS laws 
11. Contribute to developing a risk control implementation plan according to the hierarchy of control measures
12. Provide written information to individuals and duty holders to facilitate implementation of reviewed control measures
