As a result, the Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners agreed to build a large pile light with a powerful beam at Moville, ensuring safe passage for ships navigating the tricky waters of Lough Foyle.
In the late 1800s, Moville was one in a string of lighthouses built on piles, including Spitbank and Dundalk.
