The Cornish rim on this pot can be found on 19th century flowerpots from southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois.  Native American tribes, including the Meskwaxi (Fox) and Ho-Chunk, (Winnebago) had mined lead in the region long before European settlers arrived.  But In the 1840's lead and tin were discovered by European immigrants, making boomtowns of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, and Galena, Illinois.  Many new immigrants to the area were from Cornwall, England, and there were some potters among the Cornish folks, who quickly took up the trade of making everyday items for food storage, kitchen use and flowerpots, from local clay.  This ornamented rim can also be found in 19th century pottery from Cornwall.
