The Game arrived in the summer of 1980 and marked a clear shift for Queen. After the ornate approach of Jazz, the band moved toward a leaner and more contemporary sound, and for the first time brought a synthesizer into the studio (the Oberheim OB X). The result was a record that connected instantly with a wide audience.
The album became the only Queen release to reach number one in the United States and remains their best selling studio record there, matching the four million copies sold by News of the World. It also delivered two chart toppers in the United States. The bass driven pull of “Another One Bites the Dust” became one of the defining singles of the year, while “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” showed the band’s ease with rock and roll phrasing drawn from earlier eras.
Critical reaction at the time was mixed. Some writers praised the band for turning toward tighter songwriting, while others were less receptive to the stylistic shift. Even so, the record earned major recognition in North America, including nominations at the Grammy Awards and a win for Favorite Pop Rock Single at the American Music Awards.
In later assessments, The Game has often been viewed as the band’s strongest work of the early eighties. Its mixture of pop, rock, and contemporary production placed it firmly within its moment, and it remains one of Queen’s most approachable and widely played albums.
