Why do past events matter in your organisation?

It is often said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This is especially true when it comes to events that have shaped our world. By understanding the causes and effects of past events, we can learn from them and make better decisions in the present.

One of the most important lessons we can learn from history is the importance of balanced, bipartisan government. This was a key lesson from the Roman Republic, which fell apart when government became too polarized. The same lesson was learned during the American Civil War, when the country was nearly torn apart by two factions vying for control.

In more recent history, we can learn from the mistakes made during the Cold War. The Cold War was a time when the world was on the brink of nuclear war, and it is a sobering reminder of what can happen when two superpowers are in conflict. By understanding the causes of the Cold War, we can hopefully avoid repeating those mistakes in the future.

The study of history is important not only for understanding the world around us, but also for developing the critical thinking skills necessary to make informed decisions. By learning from past events, we can make a better future for ourselves and our societies.

Background - Why do we need to learn from the past?

Organisations operate in an increasingly complex and uncertain environment. To survive and thrive, they need to adopt a proactive approach to risk management and be resilient to external shocks. Learning from past events is a key part of this.

When things go wrong, it’s important to understand why and take steps to prevent them happening again. By learning from past events, organisations can improve their risk management processes and become more resilient.

There are many benefits to learning from past events, including:

  • Reduced likelihood of repeats: if you understand why an event happened, you can put measures in place to prevent it happening again.
  • Increased efficiency: learning from past events can help you to streamline processes and avoid duplication of effort.
  • Improved decision-making: by understanding the consequences of past events, you can make better decisions about future actions.
  • Enhanced reputation: learning from past events and taking steps to prevent them happening again can improve your organisation’s reputation.

There are several steps you can take to learn from past events:

  • Review: carry out a review of the event to understand what happened, why it happened and what the consequences were.
  • Analysis: analyse the review findings to identify any patterns or trends.
  • Action: take action to prevent similar events happening in the future.

Organisations need to define what a lesson is, how it’s captured, disseminated and used. The value of lessons learned is the ability to apply them proactively to ensure the success of an undertaking. This principle is closely aligned to that of risk management, where we look to manage potential future events to ensure the success.

Very pleased with my purchase
Color: Brown, Size: Mid Back
Easy to put together - instructions are good - excellent quality and the chair is comfortable. Far from being flimsy it's a heavy chair which rolls perfectly as needed. You won't find that many good chairs (if any!) at this excellent price. As always the ultimate question is: would I buy it again? The answer is YES, definitively. Great purchase.

superb, worth 2x the pricez
Color: Brown, Size: High Back
While this may appear to be an average run of the mill copycat sort of generic office chair, it's actually very comfortable with perfect lumbar support. Looks great, and the leather (or leather equivalent) feels durable. This sucker will last me in my WFH setup for years I do not doubt. Save yourself a few hundred bucks getting this versus some "premium" office chair... I doubt you'll notice much if any difference.

22 year old gamer approved.
Color: Black, Size: Mid Back
So far so good!! I bought this chair for my gamer son, he sat the springs out of his last one, so this one making it this long has me very pleased. It was easy to put together, and the quality is pretty notable, especially the wheels, super smooth rolling. It was definitely worth what we paid for it, and he finds it very comfortable, providing plenty of back support, and a stable seat for hours of gaming.

The back of the chair is not supportive
Color: Brown, Size: Mid Back
Really nice casters that truly roll quietly. The faux leather is stitched well and sturdy. The only problem i have is that the back is not adjustable and gives 0 back support. The whole back of the chair is hollow inside so your lumbar gets no help. The seat is comfy but super wide like a lot of other reviews mentioned

Stick with Name Brands
Color: Grey
Product arrived as described. I am 47, 5'9" and 195 lbs. I suffer from lower back pain. I am a graphic designer that spends hours in front of the computer. I purchased a less expensive chair, but it made my back feel like it was on fire and I was hobbling around the home like an elderly man. It wa sa gaming chair, with a cool look, but horribly uncomfortable—about $75 less than this chair. I decided on Serta due to the brand recognition and quality of build. The chair arrived without blemish. It's very easy to assemble, taking me about 20 mins. I am very pleased with the look and quality of the leather. The seat cushion and back rest is quite comfortable. Firm, but soft, not too firm, but not too soft. I spend long hours at my desk and so far my back feels great. No burning, no hobbling. It's worth the extra $50-100 in cost. Happy customer.
