The Black Box IP Server Access Module - Serial, CATx is a compact, high-reliability solution designed to simplify remote server management and power control in data centers, server rooms, and distributed IT environments. By placing the server or serial target up to 32 feet away from the switch, this module delivers direct, dependable access to console ports, serial interfaces, and management workflows without forcing physical proximity. It is engineered for continuous operation, with a dedicated keep alive feature that preserves power to the module even if the switch experiences a power outage. This capability translates into faster recovery, streamlined remote diagnostics, and minimized downtime for critical infrastructure. The device’s flash-upgradable firmware ensures you can stay current with evolving remote management protocols, security practices, and feature enhancements. With CATx connectivity, it accommodates flexible installation environments, helping you optimize cable routing, noise immunity, and infrastructure density while preserving robust serial communication.

  • Extended RS232 / Serial reach up to 32 feet (9.8 meters) from the switch, enabling centralized access to console and management ports across large racks or distributed server rooms. This distance capability supports consistent signal integrity for serial commands, status polling, and diagnostic sequences without relocating servers or management gear. It is ideal for data centers with tight rack spacing, multi-area deployments, or environments where direct line-of-sight to the server is impractical.
  • Keep Alive power ensures the module remains powered even when the network switch loses power. This dependable feature guarantees that remote access, diagnostics, reboot sequences, and configuration changes remain possible during power outages or maintenance windows, reducing outage duration and speeding up recovery times. It also provides a stable management path for automated scripts and monitoring software that rely on continuous console access.
  • Serial interfaces designed for flexible server control and power control with configurable serial settings. Whether you need to issue commands to servers, trigger controlled reboots, or manage connected serial devices, the module supports a range of RS232 configurations and signaling options. The serial configuration is accessible for tailored deployments, allowing IT teams to align the interface behavior with existing management workflows and device profiles.
  • Flash upgradeable firmware keeps the device future-ready and adaptable to evolving management standards, security patches, and feature expansions. Regular firmware updates can improve reliability, compatibility, and performance, helping your investment stay current with minimal disruption. The process is designed to be straightforward, enabling IT personnel to apply upgrades without extensive downtime or complex procedures.
  • CATx connectivity with KV41 integration offers flexible deployment across different network topologies while extending RS232 / Serial targets to the KV41 platform. This integration enables streamlined management across multiple devices and enables you to consolidate remote access paths in a single, coherent management strategy. The CATx medium supports shielded or unshielded installations as dictated by your environment, balancing ease of cabling with signal integrity and EMI considerations.

How to Install Black Box IP Server Access Module

Installing the Black Box IP Server Access Module - Serial, CATx is designed to be straightforward, delivering rapid integration with existing network and server management workflows. Start by planning the placement: locate the module close enough to the switch to minimize signal loss on the CATx link, while ensuring the target serial devices remain accessible. Because the module extends serial reach to 32 feet, you can position it in an optimal central point within the rack or data center cabinet to simplify cabling and reduce interference.

  • Step 1: Power down the equipment as required and mount the module in a suitable rack or enclosure near your switch. Ensure adequate clearance for air flow and cable management, and verify that the mounting method does not obstruct any vent or access panels.
  • Step 2: Connect the CATx cable between the switch and the IP Server Access Module. Use a shielded CATx cable where EMI or cable length concerns exist, and follow your data center’s cabling standards for labeling and routing. Confirm the cable is fully seated at both ends to prevent intermittent connectivity.
  • Step 3: Attach the RS232 serial devices or servers to the module’s serial port(s) as required. Use the appropriate DB9 or other connector type and ensure baud rates, parity, and flow control settings align with your existing device configurations. This step establishes the direct path for remote console access, server control, or power control commands.
  • Step 4: Apply power and verify the keep alive function. If your environment includes redundant power or uninterruptible power supplies, ensure the keep alive path remains continuous during switch outages. After powering up, check for link status indicators and confirm that remote access endpoints are reachable from your management station or DCIM tool.
  • Step 5: Update firmware if needed. Access the device’s management interface to perform a flash upgrade, following the manufacturer’s guidance for safe update procedures. After the upgrade, re-test all serial paths and power-control commands to confirm proper operation and to verify that the new firmware is correctly installed.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: How far can the RS232/Serial target be extended from the switch?

A: The system supports an extension of up to 32 feet (9.8 meters) from the switch to the serial target, enabling remote management of servers and serial devices without relocating equipment. This distance helps maintain consistent signal integrity while simplifying cabling layouts across larger racks or distributed environments.

  • Q: What happens if the switch loses power?

A: The module includes a keep alive feature that powers the module even when the switch loses power, preserving access for diagnostics, reboot control, and configuration changes. This capability minimizes downtime during outages and supports rapid recovery workflows.

  • Q: Can I upgrade the firmware on this module?

A: Yes. The Black Box IP Server Access Module features flash-upgradable firmware, allowing you to apply updates that improve performance, security, and compatibility with evolving remote management standards. Regular updates help protect your deployment and extend the device’s usable lifespan.

  • Q: What is KV41, and how does it relate to this module?

A: The product extends RS232/Serial targets to the KV41 via CATx connectivity, enabling management paths that integrate with KV41-compatible devices or configurations. This compatibility supports streamlined control workflows when KV41 is part of your management ecosystem.

  • Q: Is this module compatible with non-Black Box switches or mixed environments?

A: The module is designed to work with systems that provide CATx connectivity and RS232 serial interfaces. It integrates best in environments that have standardized serial management practices and CATx cabling, but compatibility with other brands depends on the specific serial signaling and network design. Always verify signaling levels, baud rates, and cable standards before deployment.

Received this today, and it lasted less than an hour before it had to be taken away to prevent it being eaten.

Very fun toy at a great price
Color: Monsieur Acorn - Large
My dog (an American Staffordshire Terrier) lovessss to chew and destroy things! We have literally gotten three of these because she loves them so much, and they last, too!! You get the first toy, which my dog rips open. I’m not sure exactly how long it takes for her to destroy it, maybe a few days to a week. Then another little toy (with a sad face lol) is revealed. She highly enjoys this one, as well! Finally, she rips the fabric off that and then a blue, spiky ball is revealed. She lovesss to chew on it and I think the bumps are a nice texture for her mouth. She is quite a strong chewer and the ball lasts a long time!! No toy lasts forever and I have found under dog toys are quite expensive and that’s no guarantee of how long it will actually last. But I am perfectly fine with spending ~$11 every once in a while for these toys because I know she loves them, and they are not immediately destroyed.

Would happily purchase again.
Color: Hedgehog
My powerchewer of a dog destroys plushies in 10 minutes and most other 'tough chew' toys don't last more than a day or two - at most. But he loves his hedgehog and hasn't managed to destroy it! Sure, it has a plethora of teeth marks, but it's in one piece and he hasn't managed to bite off any chunks (I was worried about the hedgies nose 😂). It stands up to his teeth and allows him to satisfy his need to gnaw & chew, safely.
