Bredasdorp is a small town in the southern Overberg, set on gently rolling limestone plains between the Riviersonderend mountains to the north and the remote coastline of Cape Agulhas to the south. It serves as the administrative centre of the Cape Agulhas municipal district and as a practical hub for the surrounding wheat and wool farming region. The town is also home to the Shipwreck Museum, reflecting the long and dangerous history of the coastline nearby.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard tube for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

History

Bredasdorp was established in 1838 on land donated by Michiel van Breda, a prominent Cape landowner, and grew as a service town for the agricultural communities of the southern Overberg. Its position on the open limestone plateau, away from any major river, is unusual — the town developed not around water or a natural crossing point but around the convergence of farm roads serving a productive but thinly populated district. It was laid out on a modest grid, and its measured, unhurried growth means that pattern remains legible in the town centre today.
