Збірку відкриває повість 'Надзахідне сонце' (1947), що посідає центральне місце в творчому доробку письменника. У ній, на тлі занепаду аристократичного роду і згасання традицій витонченої Японії, розповідається історія поневірянь представника столичної богеми повоєнного періоду — декадента й бунтівника, який насправді прагне любові та душевного спокою.

До збірки також увійшла мала проза різних періодів творчості письменника, а саме: дебютне оповідання 'Поїзд' (1933), автобіографічний есей 'Сто видів Фуджі' (1938), оповідання 'Феєрверк' (1942) та останній твір — 'Вишні' (1948). У цих різних за жанром і проблематикою текстах невиправний романтик і скептик, шукач істини і зневірений крамольник складає епізоди свого життя у невигадливі 'побутові' сюжети, відчайдушно намагаючись вписатися в ритм тогочасного японського суспільства та збагнути його цінності. Сфокусована на внутрішньому світі автора проза насичена (само)спостереженнями та до подиву відвертими, глибокими і часом іронічними роздумами письменника про емпатію, довіру, щирість, самотність, підкорення долі та прийняття.

I just wish it would go farther in one direction before changing directions so that my kitty could chase it farther, as we have plenty of space in our house for her to run. But that certainly could be a plus for other cats, enjoying not knowing where the ball is going to go next and really keep them on their toes.
