Dig fast and efficiently, with little effort. Widely used garden and farm tool. These are the classic digging tools that millions of small farmers and gardeners around the world use every day, and for good reason - its the easy way to dig!

Pick Mattock: A Versatile and Durable Groundbreaking Tool

The pick mattock is a robust and versatile tool that has been a staple in the toolkit of gardeners, farmers, and construction workers for generations. This combination tool, consisting of a pick on one end and an adze or mattock blade on the other, offers a wide range of uses, making it an invaluable asset for various outdoor tasks.

Versatile Applications

  1. Digging and Breaking Ground: One of the primary uses of the pick mattock is for digging and breaking up tough and compacted soil. The pick end is designed with a pointed tip that can easily penetrate the ground, making it ideal for excavating holes for planting, fence posts, or other outdoor construction projects. It can also help break up hardpan soil or rocky terrain, making it a versatile tool for gardeners and landscapers.

  2. Clearing Roots and Rocks: The adze or mattock blade on the other end of the tool is perfect for cutting through roots and removing rocks from the soil. This makes it an essential tool for clearing land or preparing garden beds. The flat blade can also be used to shape and level the soil, ensuring a smooth and even surface for planting or construction.

  3. Chopping and Trenching: The pick mattock is also effective for chopping through thick vegetation, creating trenches, or digging ditches. Its dual-purpose design allows you to switch between the pick and mattock end depending on the task at hand, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of outdoor projects.

Durability: Key Considerations

When choosing a pick mattock, durability is of utmost importance to ensure that the tool can withstand the demands of heavy-duty use. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when selecting a quality brand:

  1. Material Quality: Opt for a pick mattock made from high-quality materials. The head of the tool should be forged from strong and durable steel to withstand repeated impact and maintain its edge over time. A sturdy wooden or fiberglass handle is also crucial to provide a comfortable grip and prevent breakage during use.

  2. Welding and Construction: Inspect the welding and construction of the pick mattock. A well-constructed tool will have secure welds that connect the head to the handle firmly. Poorly welded pick mattocks are prone to breaking or becoming loose with heavy use, which can be both dangerous and frustrating.

  3. Weight and Balance: Consider the weight and balance of the pick mattock. A well-balanced tool will reduce fatigue during prolonged use, allowing you to work more efficiently. While a slightly heavier tool may provide more force, it's essential to strike a balance between weight and usability based on your physical strength and the tasks you intend to perform.

The pick mattock is a versatile and indispensable tool for various outdoor tasks, including digging, clearing, chopping, and trenching. When selecting a quality brand, prioritize factors such as material quality, welding and construction, weight, balance, and brand reputation to ensure that your pick mattock will serve you reliably for years to come. With the right pick mattock in hand, you'll be well-equipped to tackle a wide range of outdoor projects with ease and efficiency.

I love VSI on Kindle
Format: eTextbook
The thing is they take a long time to read because of the look up feature. It's like reading a book in the Library of Congress.

There are few who are capable of telling the story ...
Format: Paperback
There are few who are capable of telling the story of plate techtonics including critical details. Peter Molnar is one of those chosen few who can deliver such a story succinctly and precisely.

Very nice, but very short, book on the subject.
Format: Paperback
This is a very nice, but very short, book on the subject. I learned quite a bit and enough to delve into structural geology and related subjects.

Excellent 120 pages book on a complex subject.
Format: Paperback
I thought this was an excellent 120 pages book on a complex subject. It discusses a variety of subjects besides the title of plate tectonics and which are related to it: continental drift, oceanic seafloor spreading, fracture zones, subduction of tectonic plate edges, faulting, the creation of mountains and plateaus, earthquakes, volcanism, oceanic magnetic anomalies, and the locations of concentrated metallic ores. The text is accompanied by almost 40 sketches and diagrams elaborating on the discussions provided in the text. The book also introduces the grand concepts of Earth geology such as the mantle, lithosphere, and asthenosphere. It also provides a short history of the development of the concept of plate tectonics. Finally, the book provides specific detailed descriptions of the formation of major mountain ranges and plateaus such as the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, Tien Shan, the Tarim Basin, the movement of Eastern Asia, the Andes, and the western US mountain ranges. It also gives a short description of the movement of India from the eastern edge of the African Plate to the Eurasian Plate over the past 90+ million years.

Books like this have to be leavened with a human dimension ...
Format: Paperback
This book is too technical for people who are new to the subject of plate tectonics. In fact, I think it is fair to say that if you can understand this book you don't need to read it but if you need to read it you won't understand it. Books like this have to be leavened with a human dimension in the form of stories about people. This book has such stories but they are very brief and tend to get burried under the tecnical detail. There are other books in the "A Very Short Introduction" series which give far more accessible introductions to plate tectonic (e.g. "Earth Science: A Very Short Introduction"). I would suggest that anyone who was entirely new to the subject should read one of them instead.
