Black Ribbon Eel – Rhinomuraena quaesita

Overview:
The Black Ribbon Eel is a striking and rare marine eel, recognized for its long, ribbon-like body and intense black coloration, accented by vibrant yellow nostrils. Its unique appearance and elegant swimming make it a standout species in large marine aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found in sandy reef slopes and lagoons from Indonesia to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, offer live or frozen shrimp, small fish, and other meaty marine foods. Feeding can be challenging, requiring patience and consistent care.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful, larger species. Avoid small fish and invertebrates that may be seen as prey.

Aggression:
Predatory – generally peaceful with larger tank mates but hunts smaller animals.

Experience Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with deep sand substrate for burrowing and plenty of hiding spots. Not recommended for beginners due to specialized feeding needs.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Minimum Tank Size: 125+ gallons

The Black Ribbon Eel is a rare, elegant, and visually captivating predator, ideal for experienced marine aquarists looking to add a dramatic centerpiece with unique behavior to their aquarium.

Worth it albeit online claim process need work
I submitted the claim online twice and each time the claim was denied due to missing documents, which I included. Calling the customer service center was helpful. Shout out to UPS, who picked up the returned item and provided a receipt. Still recommend getting protection, might be an exercise of patience but still worth it.
