IGx

Timpani, Kick drums, kettle drums, these are all great examples of instruments that inspired the innovation of Wilson Benesch infrasonic technologies. Each musical instrument creates low frequency sound with attack and dynamics that hit you in the chest.

The IGx seeks to recreate this experience of live music using innovative technologies including the push-pull motor design, a rounded geometric enclosure that mimics these instruments and a super lightweight Carbon Fibre – Polyethylene Terephthalate diaphragm. By combining these highly evolved technologies, Wilson Benesch deliver the ultimate solution – lightning fast, highly integrated, perfectly resolved low frequency sound that physically moves the listener.

Launched in 2006, the original Torus Infrasonic Generator remains a significant departure from all prior art. Unlike all design’s prior, the Wilson Benesch Torus Infrasonic Generator eliminated the cabinet from any and all structural responsibilities. Instead, Wilson Benesch placed a 16kg Steel Core at the heart of the Torus Infrasonic Generator. The core legislates that all energy from the two push-pull Neodymium motors is grounded. Ingeniously simple. Totally unique.

Through collaboration with two leading companies in the field of fibre weaving and composite design, a new fabric was invented to achieve what was previously impossible. The Carbon Fibre – Polyethylene Terephthalate diaphragm is geometrically optimised and realised from a woven material that incorporates both the fibre as well as the resin matrix. This material is woven exclusively in Europe for Wilson Benesch. The geometrically optimised, sub-100g, Carbon Fibre – Polyethylene Terephthalate diaphragm is a marvel of engineering. The lightweight diaphragm can support 1000 times its own mass, a testament to the stiffness of the structure. The diaphragm at the heart of the new IGx sets the industry standard both in terms of stiffness and damping. It is a peerless solution that enables the reproduction of lightning-fast Timpani.

Inspired by the instruments that it aspires to reproduce, the IGx’s circular external structure is the geometrically perfect shape. The absence of flat panels or material redundancy is notable, taking its place is the curvature that defies cabinet resonance, a perfect example of form follows function.

The new IGx represents a new level of refinement, quality and performance. Delivering music enthusiasts a new level of low frequency sound reproduction within their personal home audio system.

DESIGN

At the heart of the IGx there is no dynamic drive unit in the conventional sense.

A conventional dynamic drive unit places a diaphragm inside a basket with a voice coil that is connected to a stiff spider at the centre of the basket structure that controls the position of the diaphragm with a rubber surround that connects to the basket perimeter.

Conversely the IGx does not have a basket at all, during playback the position of the lightweight diaphragm is dictated to and controlled by two 82mm voice coils and two high power NdFeB magnets that operate in a push-pull formation. One coil and one magnet sits directly above the diaphragm forming the visible chrome cap at the centre of the diaphragm, whilst a second coil and second magnet is on the underside of the diaphragm inside the IGx. The two magnets and coils in turn reside around a huge steel core that is placed in the centre of the IGx in the vertical axis.

The IGx still has a spider and a surround, but the position of the cone is dictated to by a push pull electromagnetic motor, therefore overcoming the need for super stiff spiders and suspensions required in a conventional subwoofer design. A very stiff spider and surround resist and retard the movement of the diaphragm, so because the IGx does not have to overcome such resistive elements the movement of the lightweight diaphragm is extremely efficient. Wilson Benesch have observed the basic laws of physics and through thoughtful design created a low frequency woofer that does not require thousands of watts from an amplifier, whilst still being the industry reference in terms of step response and dynamics.

18" CARBON FIBRE - PET DIAPHRAGM

A completely bespoke Carbon Fibre - PET fabric was developed by Wilson Benesch during the development of the original Torus Infrasonic Generator. This fabric is woven in Europe exclusively for WB.

The CF-PET fabric delivers multiple advantages. It allows WB to form the complex highly optimised toroidal geometry of the IGx diaphragm from a single piece of fabric and not a patchwork of carbon fibre pre-preg. This in turn derives maximum stiffness, maximum damping and optimal energy flow down the fibre. The IGx 18” diaphragm is the stiffest, lightest, and most highly damped dynamic drive unit diaphragm ever made. The IGx diaphragm weighs less than 100g but it is able to support one thousand times its own mass, a testament to the stiffness of the structure.

If fidelity is accuracy, then within a system that is recreating a recorded piece of music, timing is fidelity. Any delay in the drive unit diaphragm transient response to the signal that it is delivered by the amplifier is a loss of fidelity.

Thus the design of the IGx is highly optimised, being both stiff and light, the IGx 18” diaphragm is able to maintain pistonic movements of air to create low frequency infrasonic sound that is perfectly timed, whilst also not distorting thanks to the unique damping properties of the CF-PET material.

THE CORE

A dual motor push/pull drive system consists of two sets of 82mm diameter voice coils that are deployed in front of and behind an 18" CF-PET diaphragm around a massive 16kg precision machined central core containing high energy rare-earth magnets. The coils use non-commercially available but incredibly high heat conducting boron nitride, and the core conducts all the heat and structural borne resonant energy directly to the ground bypassing the cabinet.

The are multiple other benefits to the Core:

1. It eliminates the requirement for a stiff spider to dictate the position of the diaphragm.

2. Instead the position of the diaphragm is dictated to electro-magnetically by two rare-earth high power magnets driving two coils in a push-pull formation.

3. Efficiency, because the IGx is not having to overcome the spider which induces latency and massive inefficiency in the use of the power of the amplifier to overcome the stiffness of the spider, the energy provided by the amplifier is used efficiently to drive a lightweight carbon fibre diaphragm.

4. Almost all of the energy generated in the IGx enclosure is placed directly through a central steel core.

5. The Steel Core is placed in the vertical axis, this ensures that all the moving components of the IGx are moving through the gravitational plane.

6. The steel core is also one huge heat sink, it is able to absorb the large amounts of heat that the two coils create

HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL CROSS BRACING

The IGx has a geometrically optimised circular drum like form. This provides maximum stiffness across the external structure. But in addition to this, Wilson Benesch have engineered the IGx with a added stiffness and damping across the horizontal and vertical axis of the IGx.

A large 10mm diameter steel ring is placed across the centre of the horizontal axis. This interfaces with all of the side panels that form the IGx.

In the vertical axis, 12mm wide steel bars are used to tie the top ring to the bottom ring. These are in turn put under tension to not only provide additional stiffness across the structure, but also damping of resonant energy.

The result is a highly inert acoustically silent drum shaped enclosure which eliminates the common issue with subwoofer designs that suffer with so called "subwoofer droning".

EFFICIENT CLASS D AMPLIFICATION

The modular digital electronics driving the IGx are housed in the base of the IGx. Wilson Benesch selected a 500w Class D amplifier to drive the IGx. Diametrically opposite to all other subwoofer designs which require massive amounts of power to drive the diaphragm due to inefficient designs which require the stiffness of super stiff spiders to be overcome before movement of the diaphragm can be induced, the IGx does not have to overcome this problem.

Class D amplification has developed rapidly in recent years. The quality of such amplification technology now far exceeds what was possible when the Torus was developed. There are many advantages of Class D in subwoofer design which include,

1. Compact Small Form Factor

2. Highly Efficient

3. Low Heat Generation

4. Reliability

CONTROL SYSTEM

The IGx control boards that control the amplifier have been developed in partnership with CASS Audio.

CAAS Audio were one of the GMT Consortium partners, central to the development of all the control systems.

The IGx controls allow adjustment of,

- Phase 0-180-degree

- Filter setting 30-90Hz

- Gain -30dB to +45dB

REVIEWS & AWARDS

The Absolute Sound

“The pair of IGx’s brings up the very low end and adds fullness and weight. But their addition isn’t what you would come to expect if you’ve added conventional subwoofers to a loudspeaker. Rather than take over the bass duties of the main speakers and dramatically alter tonal balance, coherence, and dynamic continuousness, the IGx’s contribution is much more subtle. To its credit, the IGx exhibited exactly none of the downsides of subwoofers—a discontinuity between the subs and main speakers and a disjointed rendering in which the low bass sounds slow and ponderous. Rather, the IGx blended with the Omnium absolutely seamlessly, making the entire speaker system sound “of a piece” to a degree I haven’t heard from other four-piece speaker systems. The IGx is very subtle sonically, but the musical effect is profound “

Awesome robo-vac/mop with rotating mop head/no pads.
Size: E25 Black
I owned a Narwal Freo for 1 year and it died right after the warranty period was up. Tried replacing the battery but that did not fix the issue so I had to purchase another one. I noticed this eufy had high reviews and the 1 star reviews seemed to be just isolated issues so I purchased this one. Right away I noticed that the instructions/setup was much more simple. Second this one has a big wide mop roller on the front and after mopping I didn't see the mop streaks in circular patterns on the floor like I did with the Narwal as it had two rotating mop heads on the front so the single mop roller seems to be a better solution. Setup consisted of removing protective wrappers off of the tanks and base station, filling up the clean water tank, installing the detergent bottle and plugging it in. Next I downloaded the app and connecting the vac/mop to my network. This was SIMPLE to say the least. From there I could have just clicked clean on the app and it would clean the entire house. However, mapping gives you more flexibility when planning your cleaning ritual. You can define no go zones and clean rooms in any order you choose. I have a shedding dog so I have a separate robovac to clean up the dog hair prior to vac/mopping. This is a MUST with any robovac/mop combo as the dog hair on the floor will mix with the water and detergent and eventually prevent the mop from doing a good job. It will make a mess in the bottom tray of the base station too. I learned this through experience and reading all the one star reviews from customers. Robovac only cleaners last a LONG time. I had one that is still working great for over 3 years. All I had to do was replace the battery so it doesn't have to pause the job to recharge. So the mapping only took 4 minutes and it was pretty accurate. After the mapping I defined the room boundaries and renamed the rooms. Next I sent it off to clean and it did a FABULOUS JOB! No streaks and the floors are clean. The noise level is really low and more quiet than the Narwal. The other thing I noticed is it didn't use up much water to rinse the mop while cleaning. The Narwal used a lot of water and I was always dumping dirty water and adding fresh. I will always have a robomop and robovac as they save me so much time by not having to do this job twice a week. Connectivity to my network is excellent as it's in a location far from the router. This vac/mop is a good value for the money if IT LASTS BEYOND 1 YEAR. I will update this review as necessary and if it fails right after the warranty period I will report and downgrade this review to 1 star. These companies need to learn the importance of reliability and correct these issues. When I first reviewed the NARWAL it had almost a perfect 5 star review from all customers. After the year was up and it failed that star rating went down to 3+ stars. Most reviews reported their robovac/mop just died like mine did after the warranty period. I downgraded my review and reported the issue. I'm hoping this one will last because at the moment I am VERY satisfied with it like most customers. This model has been on the market much longer at the time of purchase so I would suspect if there were any reliability flaws they would have been addressed and corrected by now. We shall see. At this time I highly recommend!!

Excellent Robot Vacuum, Especially for the Price
Size: 11S, Size: 11S
I have been an iRobot Roomba buyer since 2007. My last Roomba bit the dust this month, and I did a ton of research before buying a replacement. I went with the Eufy for a few reasons: price point, cleaning power, quietness, and sleek design. Price: Very reasonable. Almost reasonable enough that I'd consider getting another one for my second floor. For now I'll just carry it upstairs. Cleaning power: This thing sucks... It's suction is much stronger than my Roombas have had. It picks up so much dust and pet hair. We do a full vacuum every other week with my Dyson, so I think of the robot vacuum as a supplemental vacuum. I was shocked at how much was in the dustbin after it's inaugural cleaning! The picture attached to this is from that cleaning. It also gets a ton of dust in the little dust filter. In one of the video reviews I watched, the reviewer said it didn't pick up anything in that dust filter... So maybe my carpet is particularly dusty, because it has a thick layer after each cleaning. Quietness: I work from my home office, and this thing is quiet enough that I don't even turn it off during conference calls. This might be the thing I am most impressed with. My last Roomba was LOUD-- you couldn't even have a conversation with someone in the same room, let alone someone on speakerphone. Sleek design: I love/hate this. It definitely looks modern and cool, and more like an art piece than an appliance, but it shows all my finger prints, and now I keep a glasses cleaning cloth nearby so I can rub it down. I suppose if I only use the remote and never pick it up, this won't be an issue. A few considerations: I was hoping to find a robot vacuum that wouldn't eat my carpets' tassels, but I don't think that vacuum exists. I have only used the Eufy 4 times so far, and it doesn't always get its brushes wrapped around the long tassels, but it does sometimes. It seems to realize it sooner than my Roomba did at least. The Roomba would sometimes rip gobs of them off in a single cleaning. I try to tuck them under the edge of the rug and that doesn't seem to bother Eufy. It has pulled off probably 2 tassels so far. The cleaning pattern seems pretty random. I saw some other vacuums that chart out complex maps of your home, and Eufy doesn't seem to do that. But, it doesn't seem to matter, because it still hits every spot in the rooms. I'm a little concerned about durability. My Roombas ran for many, many years with easily replaceable parts. We'll have to see if Eufy has the same longevity. All in all- I'm very happy with my purchase and definitely recommend it!

Robot Vacuum With Decent Cleaning but Too Much Maintenance
Size: E28
This robot vacuum was fairly simple to set up, and the battery life is actually pretty good. When it comes to cleaning, it does a solid job picking up dirt and debris, and overall the suction works well for everyday vacuuming. However, the navigation and sensors really missed the mark for me. It struggled to recognize certain items around my house. For example, the mat under my cat’s food bowl kept getting caught because the vacuum didn’t detect it properly. It also had trouble recognizing furniture like my ottomans and would repeatedly run into them. Another issue was how it handled different floor types. It’s supposed to be able to recognize surfaces like carpet versus hard flooring, but that didn’t always work correctly. At one point it even tried cleaning my carpet when it shouldn’t have. It also struggled with room detection and didn’t consistently recognize different areas of my home, even when placed directly in them. I bought this hoping for more of a “set it and forget it” type of appliance since I work a lot and wanted something that would keep my floors clean without much attention. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. I often had to redo the mapping or move the vacuum around so it could recognize spaces and objects properly. There were a few positives though. The app is very helpful and easy to use, and the vacuum communicates clearly through notifications. It lets you know when things like the water level or cleaning bin need attention, which I appreciated. Maintenance like emptying it isn’t required very often either. It’s also a little noisy. Not extremely loud, but it talks frequently and you definitely know when it’s running. Since I work third shift and sleep during the day, that was a bit frustrating. Another issue was that it struggled to cross small entry thresholds between rooms. Even a small lip between rooms would sometimes stop it from moving into another space. In the end, I decided to return it. While it does vacuum fairly well, the navigation issues and constant adjustments made it more of a hassle than a convenience. For the price, I expected something more hands-off, and unfortunately it required more attention than it was worth for me.

Great and Easy to Use!
Size: 11S
Background: I have a shedding dog, so I bought this in hopes that by running it every-day, it would pick up on some of the dog hair on the floor. What I like: -VERY easy to use. -easy to follow instructions -has a sticker on the bottom so if it ever stops and beeps, you can flip it over and it says exactly what the beeps mean (one beep means one thing, two beeps means another--which is SUPER helpful!). -color on top clearly shows what mode it is in (blue-ready to go, orange-needs to charge, red-problem to fix-such as emptying the tray). -very quiet. I can work on stuff with it in the room and it does not bother me at all (my dog also does not mind it). -works great on white carpet and easily transitions from my living room to dining room (which has a slight bump). -when its low on battery, it does not die where it is at, it just turns off the vacuum then finds the home doc and charges itself. -just works really well. I run it everyday and I am impressed by how much stuff it gets (especially when it goes under things such as the couch). -if it gets caught on a cord, it usually takes 5-10 seconds but then it stops the suctioning and moves away (releasing the cord or other item). However if you have a small cord you should put it up (and you should regardless, I just noticed it doing this a few times and thought it was neat, but I do try to pick up all cords). What could be improved: -nothing really in particular to this. -It does not work well on anything black, but this is true for all robot vacuums. It sometimes gets stuck when it goes on the black carpet we have with the black chairs (I suspect because it can not detect them), but this has not happened often. My dog has a black mat for her food and water and it always bumps into it and spills the water, but again, this would occur with any robot vacuum. -Also, make sure the doc is against a wall because otherwise it will move and never charge (self explanatory, but I did not do the first time and it kept trying to doc and was just pushing the doc around the floor). -Finally, you do have to dump out the vacuum particles almost every time you run it (if you do a full circle/battery cycle). It is really easy to dump and beeps when it needs to be emptied. Again, nothing really negative, just something to note. Overall, I really like this! It does a nice job cleaning up the dog hair and other things that get on my floor and saves me a lot of time not vacuuming daily. If you have a dog, I would watch them with this first before you use it. My dog was initially scared of it but sniffed it's "butt" and now they are cool and she does not mind it at all. Pleased with this product and would recommend! :) **UPDATE** On another note, Eufy has amazing customer service! I received an email from them addressing each of my "what could be improved" components with more information on the product. Very impressed.

ROB is amazing.
Size: E25 Black
I have to first explain that I have named my E25, his name is now ROB and will be referred to as ROB going forward. ROB has been an amazing addition to our family and yes I said Family. ROB was easy to set up, all instructions were clear and easy to follow. The first day, I followed ROB everywhere afraid he would get stuck on a rug, or would have difficulty making it over the transitions of our flooring. But ROB had no problems what so ever. And honestly, I found myself amazed at the quality and endurance of ROB. He was jumping over transitions, flipping from mop to vacuum at the proper times and would suck up a dog hair bunny from 3 feet away! As a home with 2 big dogs (over 100 pounds each) that looses enough fur to make a new sweater everyday, ROB has done an amazing job! It’s been a week with ROB and I have found that he takes no prisoners, there was an area that I didn’t want him going into because I had boxes laid out, I was lazy and just made a make shift barrier so he wouldn’t proceed through the area, but ROB was persistent and was able to move the barrier so he could do his job. So, if you want a robot that will jump a shoe wall, ROB is your man! ROB navigates around a dog toys, around dog bowls, and can even get rid of the doggy dribbles when they drink. I have ROB set up to vacuum during the day and at night, he vacuums and mops. My 2 dog sons and my family are all happy with ROB as he is quiet and doesn’t scare them. Most days they just watch ROB do his magic on our floors. ROB also cleans himself, he will run home to clean his butt after mopping and will empty his own debris from his vacuuming. I really don’t know how I survived without ROB this long!! I waited 6 months before I finally purchased ROB after seeing his brother BOB in action at my Cousins house. So don’t be like me and wait, just make the purchase. You won’t regret it.
