Історичний роман О. Соколовського 'Богун' вперше був надрукований 1931 року в підсовєтській Україні, у видавництві 'ЛІМ'. Відомо, що на вимогу видавництва автор мусив переробляти свій твір кілька разів. Це є безсумнівним доказом того, що ідейна концепція роману ніяк не вкладалася в рамки прописаного окупантом світогляду. Та навіть такі поступки не врятували автора — 1937 року Соколовському висунули звинувачення в тому, що нібито 1932 року він увійшов до складу антирадянської есерівської організації, а 1936 року був перевербований в антирадянську українську націоналістичну організацію і очолив терористичну групу, яка ставила за мету насильницьке повалення Радянської влади в Україні.

Соколовського засудили до страти виїзною сесією Військової колегії Верховного Суду СРСР 22 серпня 1938 року і того ж дня він був розстріляний… 'Богун' — історичний роман з часів Хмельниччини. Головну увагу письменник звертає на прославленого полковника Івана Богуна, його дії, військові операції та особисте життя.
