Zijn vader Frédéric had in 1850 al eens geprobeerd om een lijndienst op New York op te zetten, maar liep vast in het behoudende investeringsklimaat. De kooplieden Plate maakten deel uit van de kleine groep vernieuwers die de industriële revolutie droeg, initiatieven nam voor nieuwe bedrijven en sociale en culturele instellingen. Behalve koopman en corporate men met commissariaten waren Frédéric en Antoine Plate ook public men, actieve liberale politici in de gemeenteraad, voorzitter van de Kamer van Koophandel en Antoine als Tweede Kamerlid. Dit boek beschrijft hun activiteiten op het snijvlak van macro- en micro-economische ontwikkelingen, schaalvergroting, bewaking van de vrijhandelsgedachte en versterking van de economisch-geografische positie van Rotterdam in West-Europa door aanleg van de Nieuwe Waterweg, havens en spoorwegverbindingen.

The width of this item is such that it CANNOT be attached to the wall studs. That is unsafe for something that is intended to hold heavy items like liquor bottles. THEN the anchors that come with it are flimsy so we used a heavier different style anchor (threaded). That said, I like the way it looks, and the light effects.
