In het voorjaar verschijnen de diep karmozijnrode, fijn ingesneden bladeren, die gedurende de zomer hun kleur behouden zonder te vervagen, zelfs in de volle zon. In de herfst transformeren ze naar een spectaculair scharlakenrood, waardoor de boom een echte blikvanger wordt in de tuin.

Groeivorm Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’

Deze Japanse Esdoorn ‘Red Emperor’ heeft een opgaande, elegante groeiwijze met een open, iets overhangende kroonstructuur. Hij bereikt een uiteindelijke hoogte van 4 tot 5 meter en een breedte van 3 tot 4 meter, waardoor hij perfect geschikt is als solitaire boom of als onderdeel van een moderne tuin, achtergrond van een (middel)grote border of patiotuin. Zijn sierlijke takkenstructuur zorgt ervoor dat de boom ook in de winter decoratief is.

Sterke soort

Een van de voordelen van de ‘Red Emperor’ ten opzichte van andere Japanse esdoorns is zijn robuustheid. Hij loopt later uit in het voorjaar, waardoor hij minder gevoelig is voor late nachtvorst. Bovendien is hij relatief resistent tegen veel voorkomende ziekten en plagen, mits hij in goed doorlatende grond staat en niet te nat wordt gehouden.

Standplaats in de tuin

Deze Japanse esdoorn is bijzonder goed bestand tegen zowel zon (liever niet in de felle middagzon!) als halfschaduw en heeft minder last van zonnebrand dan sommige andere rode Acer palmatum-cultivars, zoals ‘Bloodgood’.
