Riesling “vom roten Schiefer” 2023 is een karaktervolle, terroirgedreven Riesling die perfect toont wat rode leisteen kan doen: extra spanning, kruidigheid en een ziltige, stenige grip.

In de neus frisse citrus, rijpe grapefruit en subtiele rokerigheid, met een kruidige toets die aan witte peper en gedroogde kruiden doet denken. De smaak is kristallijn en energiek, met levendige zuren, een strakke structuur en een lange, mineraal getekende afdronk die uitnodigt tot de volgende slok.

Vinificatie.
De druiven worden met de hand geoogst en vergisten spontaan met natuurlijke gisten. Door de keuze voor minimale interventie kan de vergisting uitzonderlijk lang duren. Een deel van de cuvée vergist en/of rijpt in oude grote houten foeders (Fuder) en een deel in roestvrij staal, om zowel textuur als precisie te bewaren.

Het domein.
Weingut Clemens Busch in Pünderich behoort tot de referenties van de Mittelmosel en is tegelijk een van de pioniers van duurzame wijnbouw in de streek. Clemens Busch begon al midden jaren ’70 met een radicaal andere koers in de wijngaard: hij stopte vroeg met herbiciden, schakelde over op biologische teelt en evolueerde later naar biodynamische principes. Vandaag wordt er gewerkt met een sterke focus op levende bodems, biodiversiteit en maximale weerbaarheid van de wijnstokken, met certificering volgens biologische en biodynamische richtlijnen.

Hun kernbezit ligt in de spectaculaire Marienburg-wijngaard: extreme hellingen, terrassenwerk en verschillende types leisteen (rood, blauw en grijs) die elk een eigen signatuur geven. Door het vele handwerk, late oogst waar nodig en minimale interventie in de kelder, bouwen de wijnen een reputatie op van precisie, textuur en uitgesproken terroir — zowel in droog als in klassiek “fruity-style” Mosel.

It’s really pretty decent except for one thing.

I bought two of these for my basement and they do look great. They were easy to assemble and I’m happy with them. The problem is that the stitching on the fabric panels are almost the size of a machine basting stitch (which for non sewers means large temporary stitches). Because the panels are tight by design, the stitches had already started to come undone before I could finish assembling everything. Fortunately I can sew and I reinforced all the panels. I had to take the first ones back off the poles to do them but I did the second set before assembling. It’s really not a bad product for the money. It’s quality fabric and the design itself looks great. The stitching looks fine but it’s just not substantial enough for the purpose it is supposed to serve. I can’t imagine why it be sewn so insufficiently. I was able to resolve my issue because I can sew. I wasn’t planning on sewing nor did I really have the time. I could have made it myself but I didn’t want to and that is why I purchased this. I ended up using valuable time. The really unfortunate thing is, I have no other complaints. This is a manufacturing problem.
