Deze monografie vertelt het bijzondere levensverhaal van Charles (Chas) Gerretsen (1943), een uitzonderlijke fotograaf. Hij werkte behalve als oorlogsverslaggever in Azië ook als fotograaf in Hollywood, waar hij de set van de filmklassieker ‘Apocalypse Now’ fotografeerde en vele filmsterren in hun toen nog jonge jaren. De fotografie van Chas Gerretsen, wiens levensverhaal leest als een spannend boek, is echter in Nederland nog nauwelijks bekend. Opgegroeid in Groningen zocht hij als achttienjarige al snel het avontuur op.
Het boek verschijnt ter gelegenheid van de eerste overzichtstentoonstelling van zijn oeuvre, een wereldprimeur! De gelijknamige tentoonstelling In de hoofdrol Chas Gerretsen is van 15 oktober 2021 tot en met 22 april 2022 te zien in het Nederlands Fotomuseum. Hiermee realiseert het Nederlands Fotomuseum voor het eerst een tentoonstelling en publicatie van een Collectiefotograaf die nog in leven is. Zijn bijzondere archief is in 1995 verworven en de laatste jaren is gewerkt aan het ordenen van het archief en het digitaliseren. Een proces waaraan Chas Gerretsen en zijn partner Monika Pfandzelter een zeer waardevolle bijdrage hebben geleverd door alle verhalen met het Nederlands Fotomuseum te delen.

In de hoofdrol Chas Gerretsen is de tweede monografie in een doorlopende reeks over de Collectie van het Nederlands Fotomuseum. Eerder verschenen de publicaties Sterke verhalen, Rotterdam Werkt!, Eregalerij van de Nederlandse fotografie en de monografie Van Peking tot Parijs over Ellen Thorbecke.

Ok so I never write reviews but this book was so good I felt the need to write this. Firstly your introduced to Huntyr you see her closed off hard core badass than towards the end you see the most subtle change and growth it’s amazing and the enemies to friends to lovers was just perfect, AND THE TWIST AT THE END GOT ME GOOD! You see one spicy scene the whole book but it doesn’t even MATTER BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS THAT GOOD. I’ve read 85 books in 2023-2024 so far and I’m pround to say this is my all time favorite. I’m so excited to read more of Emily Blackwoods books, this was my first time reading one of hers and I’m glad I did because HOLY!! Well done Emily well done

The tension and banter between Huntyr and Wold was delectable. I absolutely love the fallen angel and all of his flaws. Huntyr is amazing too being a badass FMC with some major trauma. The world building was great and I enjoyed the training aspect of the story. The writing was immersive and was in the story the whole time. The ending had quite a twist that I hadn’t anticipated and made my jaw DROP. Excellent job! I also loved the narration. Laura is one of my fave narrators!
