De Ilex altcalerensis 'Golden King' is een groenblijvende boom en kan een hoogte tot circa 7 meter bereiken. Het heeft een opgaande groeiwijze met een piramidale kroon. Hij groeit het best op een goed doorlaten, humusrijke, licht zure, vochtige en zandige bodem. Deze plant verdraagt een temperatuur van -15 °C. De bladeren, loten en de bloemen worden dikwijls aangetast door kolonies van verschillend gekleurde bladluizen. Let op; bepaalde plantdelen zijn giftig.
