Bolis Pupul heeft een jaar vol hoogtepunten achter de rug. Na het Succes van ‘Topical Dancer’ met Charlotte Adigéry toerde de Belg heel de wereld over. Zojuist is zijn solo-album ‘Letter To Yu’ aangekondigd voor begin 2024. Zo begint ook dat jaar met een hoogtepunt.
Toch is het niet alleen maar rozegeur en maneschijn in het leven van Pupul. Toen in 2006 Bolis’ Chinese moeder overleed bij een verkeersongeval betekende dat een keerpunt in zijn leven en wekte het ook grote nieuwsgierigheid naar zijn Chinese roots op. Hij reisde in 2018 naar Yu Wei Wun, de geboorteplaats van zijn moeder. Hier schreef hij een brief met daarin zijn ervaringen. Pas veel later, toen het album al behoorlijk vorm begon te  krijgen, herinnerde hij zich deze brief. ,,Het werd het middelpunt van het album,’’ zegt Pupul. ‘Letter To Yu’ komt uit op Soulwax’ DEEWEE en Soulwax hielp ook mee met de productie. Het zegt wat over het geluid, wat zowel dansbaar als urgent is.

After I washed the cutting board from cutting veggies, it started to splinter. Maybe I just got a defective set but I definitely do not recommend this set. Will be returning and getting a different brand/board.

A unique treatise

I've read part way through this book at this point, reading it together with a friend. It provides plenty material for discussion. It seems to me to be aimed at a seminary audience, as there are some theological and Greek grammatical terms used, but not fully explained. It's not quick reading, but it makes up for that in the unique content. The content is to take a dozen key passages whose interpretation has varied over the last couple thousand years, and show exactly how these interpretations have varied. The title of the book, "...in Full Circle" refers to the idea that some contemporary interpretations have more in common with the most ancient church fathers than they do with their immediate predecessors over the last four or five hundred years. All in all, it's a fascinating way of looking at scripture - through the eyes of influential authors over the course of almost twenty centuries.
