Explore the compelling narrative of Thomas Potts of Canterbury, a critical figure in New Zealand’s early history and environmental conservation. This brand-new paperback, measuring 170 x 240 mm and comprising 342 pages, beautifully captures the life and writings of the controversial settler and conservationist. Authored by Paul Star and published by Otago University Press on 20-09-2020, this book takes an in-depth look at Potts' dual role as a colonist and an advocate for nature.

Thomas Potts emerged as a prominent voice in the 1850s, famously protesting against deforestation in the Port Hills, near Christchurch. His later tenure as a Parliament member marked a pivotal shift towards forest conservation in New Zealand policy. Through engaging narratives, Potts introduced revolutionary concepts of protecting native birds on island reserves and forming national parks, laying the groundwork for modern conservation efforts.

This book not only recounts Potts' life from England to New Zealand but also features excerpts from his vivid diaries documenting the early days of European settlement, unpublished until now. Additionally, the book includes eleven essays from the 1880s, revealing Potts’ reflections on the socio-environmental changes of his time regarding Indigenous M?ori and P?keh? communities. Sixteen pages filled with contemporary images enhance the historical context, making this book essential for readers interested in the overlapping narratives of colonization and environmentalism.

Perfect for history enthusiasts and those passionate about conservation, Thomas Potts of Canterbury serves as a remarkable lens into the challenges of balancing development and preservation. Secure your copy today and delve into a pivotal chapter of New Zealand's environmental history.

In 1858 Canterbury settler Thomas Potts protested against the destruction of t?tara on the Port Hills near Christchurch. A decade later, as a member of Parliament, he made forest conservation a national issue. Through his writing he raised the then novel idea of protecting native birds on island reserves, and proposed the creation of national ‘domains’ or parks. As a pioneering colonist, acclimatist and runholder, however, Potts’ own actions threatened the very environments he sought to maintain. This makes him a fascinating subject as we confront present-day problems in balancing development and conservation. This book is about, and partly by, Potts, and through him about New Zealand and the course and consequences of colonisation. It describes and interprets his life, from his early years in England through to his 34 years in New Zealand. Excerpts from Potts’ vivid 1850s diary, written from close to the edge of European settlement, are published here for the first time. Thomas Potts of Canterbury also reproduces 11 long-forgotten essays by him from the 1880s, in which he reflected on the 1850s and what had happened since – both to New Zealand’s natural environment and to M?ori and P?keh?. Sixteen pages of contemporary images supplement the text. Thomas Potts of Canterbury will appeal to anyone interested in the early history of Canterbury, in environmental change, and in early efforts in New Zealand towards conservation. It is a story of conflicting goals, magnificently exemplified in the life and writings of a man who strove, 150 years ago, to be both colonist and conservationist.

Too Short & Skewed Foot. Easy Build & Good Material.
Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel, Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel
The 3 partitions I purchased were of good material but were shorter than described and the "feet" on one end of all 3 partitions was skewed a few degrees so I cannot butt them together side by side. PHOTO #1: you see me who is 63.5 inches in my shoes standing next to the 72 inch described partition minus the wheels so it is fair to say it should be 70 inches. But even so, 70 inches minus 63.5 equals 6.5 inches that should be above my head and should not include the tip of the pole and a 6 inch gap below. PHOTO #2: shows the gap when a 90 degree good end is butted against the skewed end. Good material and easy construction but just make it taller and fix the jig that skews the bottom bracket weld.

Great for “pop up home office”
Color: Grey, Size: Upgraded Base-4 Panel
If you need a space for a video conference in a hurry or to make a private corner for a kiddo to nap in this is a perfect divider that blocks light and separates spaces. It was easy to put together and collapses down to a flat panel for easy storage out of the way.

It’s a hard no from me
Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel
I ordered two of these black, single screen panels several months ago. I ordered an additional four I needed a few days ago so I would have the total of 6 that I ended up needing. I did so by clicking on my past order (2 screens) item page and simply placed my recent order for 4 more. Two of the six screens have bolts that don’t fully screw down, such that one of each panel’s four points where the screen attaches to the two legs isn’t fully screwed down and flush. As a result, the screen doesn’t stay entirely vertical -It’s warped askew. Also, 3 of the six screens are different heights than the other 3. It’s clear to me that this company has ZERO QUALITY CONTROL, as there’s not anything that is even adjustable on these screens that leaves room for user error. Additionally, there are four black rubber circles that come in the “parts/screws” bag that don’t have corresponding installation instructions in the instruction manual. Just spend a little more and go with a better quality product somewhere else.

JAXPETY Room Divider Panel 6Ft Privacy Screen Wall Divider 88" W x 73" H - 3 Panel Black
Color: Black, Size: 3-Panel, Color: Black, Size: 3-Panel
I was looking for a screen to use while making video calls. I am on a budget, wanted something easy to put together, and would hide my apt in the background. Being on a budget, I thought my purchase qualified for the coupon. I was mistaken but contacted the seller. I received a quick response explaining how the coupon was applied. I was happy with the quick response and explanation which I verified when I went back to the page. The once all put together the screens are light weight and fairly easy to move. they do not seem to be made for easy daily breakdown. However, if you should need to take them apart to move or something, easy to break down. Depending on lighting will depend on if you find them transparent. I don't mind possible vague outlines; I was looking so no real details of my belongings in the background could be seen (shelves; figurines; etc.) My apt living room has no overhead light source, so floor lamps give light. In the 3 photos of 2 of the screens put together; the first is with a lamp in front and back of the screen as well as a tv on. The next has the tv off lamps still on and the screen reflecting the pc monitors. The third is with both lamps and the tv off, monitors on but not as reflective. In the box, you have all the parts you need as well as a small tool and an instruction manual. Item 'bags' are number [though they may come off in the box] to assist with assembly. Now assembly can be easy or hard depending on your abilities and the area you are working in. I have bad knees, so kneeling was not an option for me. My first attempt to put this together, I put the 'feet bases' on while still connecting the top bar. It made it twice as hard, and I stretched the fabric more than was necessary causing wholes around some of the stitching and stretching them a little. As well as causing some stitching to come undone on one of the pictured areas. Once I took off the 'feet bases', I had an easier time to screwing in the top bars. You will still need some hand strength, which I don't have much of, but it is possible. I use the grip things to open pickles jars. Once the screens were assembled, I followed the instructions of tying an outer screen to the inner screen and using the Velcro 'privacy flaps' to complete the connection. I have what I think is low shag carpeting which they were able to stand stably on once I wiggled them into standing straight up and in place. Given these post pandemic times, I am overall happy with both the divider and the price. The 2 things I do not like about the divider is the difficulty putting in the top bar [after connecting the top and sides] and storability when not in use issue I am having. Others with larger space will likely not have the last issue.
