Why "Elbows Up"?
The phrase is a nod to legendary NHL player Gordie Howe, affectionately known as "Mr. Hockey" but also as "Mr. Elbows", whose hard-earned reputation came from his fierce, elbow-up style of play. It’s become a Canadian metaphor for standing your ground.
But the phrase took on new meaning in March 2025, when Mike Myers closed out an episode of Saturday Night Live with a bold message. Wearing a shirt that read “Canada is Not for Sale,” he looked straight into the camera, pointed to his elbow, and mouthed the words "Elbows Up" — a quiet but powerful show of patriotism and resistance against economic pressure from the U.S. The moment went viral and has since become a symbol of Canadian backbone.
