Oregon Swallowtail Post Earrings -- Papilio machaon oregonius

The official state insect of Oregon, this is a fairly common butterfly if you know where to look, but never numerous in the Columbia River Basin.  This species thrives in desert habitats and basalt canyons along streams and rivers where its larval host plant thrives.

There are several broods within the region, with the last overwintering as chrysalis in September/October to eclose (hatch) as fresh adult butterflies in April/May.

We rear hundreds of these each year on our farm, and wild release many.  It's our hope to make this butterfly a common sight in our town.
