Met hiv diende zich in de jaren tachtig een nieuw, onbekend virus aan dat vooral in de eerste jaren in Nederland duizenden dodelijke slachtoffers eiste. In de eerste jaren was een hiv- of aidsdiagnose een doodvonnis. Het zadelde met name homoseksuele mannen – maar zeker ook vrouwen – op met een stigma dat zich na decennia nog steeds moeilijk laat doorbreken. Dankzij medische vooruitgang en betere voorlichtingscampagnes veranderde dat: hiv werd een chronische en – met medicatie – niet overdraagbare aandoening. Dat maakt het makkelijk om te vergeten hoe groot de impact van de aidsepidemie in Nederland was.

Live to tell belicht iconische momenten die het Nederlandse collectieve geheugen hebben gevormd, zoals de ontroerende televisie-uitzending in 1992 waarin zanger René Klijn met Paul de Leeuw openhartig over zijn naderende dood sprak. Humberto Tan vertelt over zijn broer die aan aids overleed, prinses Mabel over haar werk als activist en long-term survivor Erwin van Rheenen over hoe het is om al 40 jaar met het virus te leven. Ook komen minder gehoorde stemmen aan bod: vrouwen, lifetime survivors die met hiv werden geboren, en migranten die in Nederland ontdekten dat ze het virus hebben.

Live to tell bevat interviews met meer dan 50 betrokkenen, van de eerste artsen die de mysterieuze nieuwe ziekte probeerden te begrijpen tot de huidige generatie die opgroeit met hiv als chronische aandoening. The side of the right side of the jacket has thread already coming apart. And I found a little snag in a different location. I'm really not happy about that. I posted photos so you can see what I mean. We were excited about this suit, but it's going back. The company needs to do better with quality control.
