Native to central and southern Mexico, this small, dry deciduous tree grows to a height of about 32 feet. When leafless, Fouquieria formosa resembles a conventional tree more than the other species in this genus and has to peel bark, and a tiny, red, tubular flower, blooms in spring that draws hummingbirds.
