ALDO LONDI (1911-2003) was one of Italy's most celebrated ceramicists. He spent most of a long and successful career creating exceptional works of great art and craft for the Italian ceramics manufactory BITOSSI CERAMICHE.

Londi’s hometown of Montelupo Fiorentino, just outside of Florence, had been an important center for pottery production since the Renaissance. Londi started working for Fratelli Fanciullacci, the region’s premier ceramics workshop, in 1922 at the age of eleven. After World War II, upon his return to Italy from South Africa—where he had been a prisoner of war—Londi became creative director of BITOSSI CERAMICHE. He would hold this position for more than 50 years and would design over 1,000 objects, ranging from jugs and vases to clocks and animal figurines.

Londi's high-level technical expertise and his vast experience in artisanal methods allowed him to create distinctively expressive and often whimsical forms, patterns, and finishes. His best-known collection was the 1950s-era Rimini Blu (1955-1965), a now iconic Mid-Century Modern series encompassing over 150 designs, all glazed in vibrant Persian blue and embossed with abstract motifs and shapes. Londi created the series' first piece, his seminal Ball Vase, in 1955. The collection holds particular historical importance because it helped to bring handcrafted works into the modernist design conversation in Italy. Although blue was not the only color Londi utilized, it became closely associated with his oeuvre.

Aldo Londi began a fruitful collaboration in 1958 with legendary architect-designer Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007), who regarded Londi as an important mentor. During his long tenure at BITOSSI, Londi would collaborate with a host of other notables. (See below.) Most of Londi’s collections, including Rimini Blu, are still in production today and are widely collected by ceramics enthusiasts. Many of his original works can be seen at the MAIB–Artistic Industrial Bitossi Museum in Montelupo, which is dedicated to the history of the firm.

BITOSSI CERAMICHE was established in 1921 as Manifattura Ceramica Cav. Guido Bitossi & Figli by Guido Bitossi in Montelupo Fiorentino in Tuscany—a region with an ancient tradition of ceramics a few kilometers from Florence. The Bitossi family, documented in the area as early as 1536, had for centuries worked there as sculptors, painters, but especially as potters. In the twentieth century, under Guido's leadership, they would introduce an extraordinary stylistic and formal renewal of their craft.

In the late 1940s, master ceramist Aldo Londi (1911-2003) was named BITOSSI CERAMICHE's creative director. He held the position for more than 50 years and would design over 1,000 objects for the company. Himself a Montelupo native, Londi brought to BITOSSI a deep expertise in the traditional production of ceramics. He nevertheless keenly appreciated the streamlined forms of the mid-century moment. Londi is best known for his Rimini Blu collection, an iconic series comprised of over 150 designs—bowls, vases, jugs, and animal figurines—all glazed in a vibrant azure hue and embossed with abstract motifs and shapes. Londi’s last solo collection, ARKitectura, stands somewhat apart from his earlier work and features elegantly minimalistic animal figures glazed in monochromatic black, white, or platinum. Both collections are still in production today.

During Londi's tenure, BITOSSI collaborated successfully with a host of famous designers, including the legendary architect-designer Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007). An avatar of 1960s counter-culture, Sottsass thought design should be provocative and sensual, and his avant-garde style blended well with BITOSSI’s mid-century aesthetic. Besides Sottsass, BITOSSI partnered with designers Piero Fornasetti, Karim Rashid, Arik Levy, Fabio Novembre, Benjamin Hubert, Matteo Thun, Monica Förster, and Cédric Ragot.

Today BITOSSI CERAMICHE is justly considered an institution. The Bitossi family and its foundation have amassed an archive of over 7,000 historical documents and materials in relation to the production of ceramics. The assemblage is housed in a museum in Montelupo. In 2014, BITOSSI became an official member of the Registry of Italian Historical Companies, appointed by the Italian National Union of Chambers of Commerce.

Perfect for offseason beach days
Winter in New England can be tough for a myriad of reasons, one being the difficulty in ensuring your high energy Labrador retriever is expelling enough energy and not climbing the walls. Luckily, this dreary time of year also means the beaches are open to dogs, and this toy is the perfect tool to make sure your furry friend gets their steps in. It is pretty easy to use and not too large for toting to the beach as it folds in half. The thrower itself is sturdy, although the included ball is a bit flimsy. Backup tennis balls are definitely recommend for public areas anyway. Once you’re done, you can bang or brush the sand right off for easy cleanup as needed. If you have kids, you get double bag for your buck because you can have them take turns throwing the ball or chasing as well. Definitely worth it’s value to tire everyone out and have some fun doing it.

Thrower great, ball not so much
Our german shepherd dog really loves this fetch thrower. I appreciate the fact that it can be folded when not in use, which makes it a lot more practical to store. Once you get the hang of it, you can chuck balls REALLY far, and with pretty great accuracy too. I am deducting one star because I feel like the included tennis ball is just, trash. It's already broken and we've only been playing with this toy for a couple of weeks, and not for very long at a time. We will be purchasing new tennis balls to continue to play with the launcher though. Overall it's a solid toy and our dog really enjoys playtime with it.

Not a vine review of free product I paid for mine
I was super excited about this launcher for my little Chihuahua who thinks playing fetch all day everyday rain or shine. Is the reason for our existing lol. I thought I'll upgrade our Dollar store awesome score many yrs ago, he deserves that. (It too came with a ball still a $1.25) Total complete let down the ball launches straight into the ground or his back. even better the ball just won't release. I have tried the ball that came with, another tennis ball, his rubber ones, no luck I have had to dramel and shave the inside of the scoop out so ball will release properly. Even then ball can't sit properly just barely grab it. Yes I have tried different throwing techniques move my hand up more quick snap of wrist . Bottom line I don't want to have to spend my time or his trying to master this ball thrower. I have put in a drawer cause of the nice fold up feature and we will stick with our Dollar store old reliable that would out launch this one any day. ***An update 5/16/26 I was super shocked AllForPaws contacted me with full refund offer. I was not at all expecting that nor was my intention of the review. 5 stars I wld give them their customer service 150% made up for the toy that has unfortunately ended up at Sunnyside Daycare. We will definitely be giving ALL FOR PAWS a second chance, Thank you so much

Foldable Design Works Great and Dog Goes Crazy for It
This ball launcher has become an instant hit in our household. The moment I pick it up, my dog is at the door wagging with excitement, which says everything about how much fun this toy brings to playtime. The foldable design works smoothly with a simple push button mechanism at the joint. Press the button and flick your wrist to extend it, or unfold it by hand if you prefer. When folding it back, it snaps securely into place. The mechanism feels solid and I expect it to hold up well with regular use. The only way I could see damaging it would be accidentally overextending it when locked open, but with normal handling it seems built to last. At 25 inches extended, this launcher gives serious throwing distance compared to what I can achieve by hand. The grip is extremely comfortable, genuinely reminiscent of a tennis racket handle with its soft, non-slip texture. Even during longer play sessions, my hand never gets tired or uncomfortable. The ball pickup feature works well too. With the 25-inch length, I do need to bend my knees slightly into a small squat for best results, but it beats bending all the way down and dealing with slobbery tennis balls by hand. The included 2.5-inch ball is smaller than a standard tennis ball, which actually makes this suitable for a wider range of dogs, including smaller breeds, not just medium and large dogs. I tested it with other 2.5-inch balls I had on hand and they worked just fine in the launcher. The ball stays secure during swinging and walking, so no worries about it falling out unexpectedly. The bright orange and blue colors make the ball easy to spot in grass or other outdoor settings. The launcher arrives ready to use right out of the box. It's convenient for storage and travel when folded, and the overall construction feels durable enough for regular outdoor use. If you want to increase throwing distance, keep your hands clean, and make fetch more exciting for your dog, this is a solid choice that delivers on its promises.

Thrower is great, ball lasted an hour
The thrower is made of strong plastic. It is nicer than some of the others I have had because it can fold in half to store easier. There is a push button to open it and close it so it doesn’t collapse when using it. The ball cup has a slot in it which I feel helps the ball come out easier. The ball has a soft covering and while my dog didn’t chew the covering off, the ball inside cracked within an hour of her playing with it. Luckily, her other balls fit in the thrower.
