Currently, Wellington suburban train services are operated by Matangi electric multiple-units, all virtually visibly identical. But as recently as 2011 there was a wide variety of electric units in use, as well as one set of locomotive-hauled carriages, providing a much more colourful and varied operating fleet, including colour schemes of an earlier era. This was not by deliberate planning: it was rather that a lack of timely decisions on new stock had led to hurried re-introduction of previously withdrawn multiple-units and locomotives. This book tells the story of this era, with an emphasis on the variety of equipment and liveries that could be seen up until 2012. The story is lavishly illustrated with photographs illustrating the visual diversity within this period.

One of the most original and moving books of poems I've ever read
Format: Paperback
Ilya Kaminsky is practically a legend, at this point, and deservedly so. This is his second book of poems, and proves well worth the wait. The individual poems are beautiful and strange; together, they comprise a kind of allegory for our times, and manage to be both somehow light-of-heart, somehow luminous, and also seriously profound. I would recommend this book even to those who don't usually read poetry, because it's beyond poetry, truly.

Beautifully written and good quality book

I received the book earlier than the estimated date. I love this poem collection of Ilya Kaminsky. Although it describes the social unrest in an unknown place (and unfamiliar to me), his poems are beautifully written with strong images and music.
THe paper quality and the book are so new and lovely. I couldn't think that it is used (as it stated).

I heard Ilya Kaminsky read his poems at Chautauqua this past summer. Over powering and dynamic to hear his voice speak his words... about his life experiences need to be remembered.

A brilliant poetic narrative whose lines leap off the pages which turn themselves.
Format: Paperback
When you get to the end, you wonder how Kaminsky worked his wondrous magic, how it's possible to think and write poetry like that. The poem is a story about Vasenka, a mythical town somewhere in the Ukraine, occupied by the Soviet army during an unspecified period of time. It is an allegory of the cruelty of occupation, the futility of the resistance of a few, and the deafness of the silent majority, a deafness that courageously resists the occupation and a deafness that hardens the heart and ignores the evil surrounding them. It could have happened anywhere anytime. The occupiers could have been Nazis, Ottoman Turks, American, English, or Spanish. The poetry is piercingly sharp, visionary, breathless and the metaphors are the likes of which you've never heard before, lines like “the sound we do not hear lifts the gulls off the water,” “Our hearing doesn't weaken, but something silent in us strengthens,” or “In these avenues, deafness is our only barricade.” This is drop-dead beautiful poetry.

Haunting Humanity lurks in war’s reactions.
Format: Kindle
The poem moves efficiently through the myriad experiences that result from deadly conflict with a nameless and menacing enemy.
I kept thinking I was reading a rendering of Kafka with the haunting glimpses of the horror of permanent victim hood.
Now I must study the Deaf Republic and hope for understanding.
