Tanavoho (also written Tanà-vohò) is a traditional Malagasy hairstyle most commonly associated with Sakalava women. It’s built from long, tightly braided sections wrapped in a circular, crown-like form, finishing with bold volume and often personalised with beads, shells, or thread. Tanavoho is frequently described as a style linked to unmarried Sakalava women and worn for moments where hair communicates identity, beauty, and status in public life.
The Sakalava are an ethnic group largely based along Madagascar’s western and north-western coastline; their name is often translated as “people of the long valleys”.
